Comparative study of the level of depression in older adults in urban and rural areas


Abstract:

In this research, it is proposed to compare the level of depression in relation to the type of geographic location (urban or rural), using the Yesavage Geriatric Depression Scale. Secondly, it is intended to identify levels of depression in both men and women and the possible clinical damage that reveal the existence of psychological involvement through this instrument. Finally, the influence of the variables: age, sex and monthly family income in the type of area. 160 adults older than 65 to 75 years of age from the province of Tungurahua are evaluated. The research design is quantitative and cross-sectional comparative. The data are analyzed with the Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS) program and applying Pearson’s Chi-square. The research results denote the presence of depression in both sectors, however, there is a higher incidence in the urban area with levels from almost high to very high with 48.7%.
