Comparing ultrasonic and breath-actuated jet nebulisers for sputum induction
Abstract:
Background: Sputum induction is an established non-invasive approach to assess airway inflammation. Ultrasonic nebulisers (UN) are typically used for sputum induction but new breath-actuated jet nebulisers (BAN) may have benefits in terms of patient experience and sample acquisition. Aim: To compare the success rate, safety and quality of sputum samples induced by UN and BAN. Methods: This was a single-site crossover study including patients with stable asthma or COPD, randomised to use BAN (Vectura - Akita Jet) at visit 1 and UN (Omron - NEU-17) at visit 2 or vice versa. Tests with both devices were performed with 4.5% saline solution with measures of BORG scale, O2 saturation and FEV1 performed after each induction.
