Comparison between traditional network and software defined network: Case of study ESPAM MFL

Abstract:

The concept of software-defined networks (SDN) is not new, but it is currently considered as a disruptive model in the conception of computer networks. This project aimed to compare the traditional network paradigm with the SDN model in a local area network, to determine the applicability of software-defined networks in the analyzed environment. Two simulation environments are implemented in GNS3, based on the ESPAM MFL’s sector 8 network: one of a traditional network, and other of SDN network with a similar design but with the characteristics proper of this paradigm. The parameters obtained from the tests were latency, jitter and packet loss. The performance results of both paradigms determined that SDNs require a smaller number of connection devices and shows advantages in network performance, control and administration.
