Comportamiento de la lipohipertrofia en pacientes con diabetes mellitus tipo 1 que acuden a la Casa de la Diabetes, Cuenca, 2017-2018

Abstract:

Materials and methods: A descriptive, transversal study was performed in 30 patients with type 1 diabetes mellitus that went to the “Casa de la Diabetes” in the city of Cuenca between September 2017 and February 2018. The patients were selected intentionally. A questionnaire that included sociodemographic variables as well as questions regarding insulin administration was used. The data was processed with the SPSS program, version 15. Results: Lipohypertrophy prevalence was 90%, distributed similarly in both sexes. However, the prevalence increased progressively according to the years since diagnosis (≥ 6 years= 100%), with the abdomen as the most affected area (77.7%). There was a higher prevalence in individuals with body mass index over 25 kg/m2 (100%), as well as in those individuals receiving more than 30 IU/day of insulin (100%). Conclusions: The prevalence of lipohypertrophy in our population is alarmingly high. Some of the likely risk factors are the time since diagnoses as well as a probable deficiency in the injection technique. Therefore, a detailed physical exam of the type 1 diabetes mellitus patient is recommended, with emphasis in the injection areas, as well as properly interrogating the patients and educating them on the proper insulin administration technique.
