Comprehension of activity diagrams for modeling business processes: Initials findings from people with limited and not limited education in computer science

Abstract:

UML activity diagrams (ADs) can be extended and used in other domains such as business process modeling. Although there are some works that have studied the use of ADs in the business process modeling area, we have not found works that assess the impact of using this type of diagram among persons with different technological skills. We have developed, validated and applied a survey to 395 persons (most of them undergraduates) from different program degrees in order to assess the degree of comprehension of business processes modeled with ADs. Our findings suggest that ADs used for business process modeling are more comprehensible for persons familiarized with the Computer Science or related domains.
