Computation of the nonextensivity parameter in the fragment-asperity model for the Ecuadorian seismic catalog by a Bayesian approach

Abstract:

This article shows the application the fragment-asperity interaction theory to the earthquakes catalog of Ecuador. This catalog contains earthquakes generated by an oblique subduction, by the movement of a sliver plate and by several shallow faults. In this scenario, the nonextensive q parameter of the theory is calculated and it is compared with other regions. The q parameter for Ecuador is higher than for other seismic catalogs. We compute the parameter q of two types of seismicity originated in different physical processes: shallow earthquakes and intermediate-depth earthquakes. For the latter, the value of q is slightly higher than for the former. An essential contribution of this article is to show the calculation of the q parameter by an algorithm that solves the inverse problem from a Bayesian approach.
