ANTHROPOMETRIC PARAMETERS AND EATING HABITS OF PATIENTS IN REHABILITATION DUE TO PSYCHOTROPIC SUBSTANCE CONSUMPTION PROBLEMS
Abstract:
Background: Drug abuse has a long-term negative impact on health, causing malnutrition and alterations in the absorption of nutrients. This works wants to assess the anthropometric parameters and eating habits of patients in rehabilitation for problems of consumption of psychotropic substances Methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional study was carried out. It included 30 male patients in rehabilitation for problems of use of psychotropic substances from a clinic in Santa Elena-Ecuador. Eating habits were identified through the application of the 24-hour reminder questionnaire and the frequency of food consumption survey. Finally, nutritional status was assessed by determining the body mass index and percentage of body fat. Results: Food intake was characterized by poor consumption of calories (83.3%), carbohydrates (96.7%), protein (90.0%), fat (76.7), and fiber (100%). Similarly, insufficient consumption of dairy products (73.3%), vegetables (63.3%), fruits (96.7%), cereals (50%) and meats (73.3%) was reflected. Both the BMI and the percentage of fat were within normal ranges. Conclusions: A balanced diet in drug addiction rehabilitation patients provides essential nutrients that prevent relapse and incorporate them into a normal life.
