Conference proceedings versus articles: The Ecuadorian case analysis

Abstract:

The recent incentives promoted by Ecuadorian government seek to increase research capabilities and scientific productivity in this country that has traditionally been scientifically low. The impact of new regulations and programs on changing Ecuador's science landscape is analyzed. The analysis is focused on conference proceedings which were used as proxy to measure the participation of Ecuadorian researchers in international scientific conferences. Number and impact of conference proceedings were compared with journal articles for the 2006-2015 period, using bibliometric data. Results showed that productivity of both types of documents has increased, but mostly proceedings. Ecuadorian researchers prefer to participate in conferences held in Spanish-speaking countries probably due to language and culture similarities. Proceedings showed lower scientific impact compared to articles, as measured by citation counts and SJR indicator. These analyses suggest that incentives are promoting internationalization of researchers, however, from the perspective of scientific impact, publishing articles should be pursuing preferably.
