Considerations on fluid resistance in open channels. Case study: CIH experimental channel
Abstract:
A hydrodynamic study of the experimental channel functioning at the Center for Hydraulic Research (CIH), in Cuba, is presented. Special attention is paid to the fluid resistance of the conduction in order to study different expressions that estimate the average flow velocity in open channels. Such expressions are based on the classical Fluids Mechanics for open channel flow, with empirical and theoretical basis, such as the Manning (1891) and Keulegan (1938) formulae mentioned by Chow (1959), as well as the generalization developed by Aldama-Ocón (2002); all of them considering a logarithmic distribution of velocities. The authors' approach found the correct estimation of parameter k as the main problem, which they solved using the results of Talmaza (1968) as the better way to estimate the fluid resistance. A potential formula for the average flow velocity, that includes the Manning formula, is proposed by the authors. A model for unsteady flow was validated in these facilities, based on the Saint Venant equations, mentioned by Chow et al. (1994) and solved through the method of the finite elements, according to the strategy of Szymkiewicz (1995).
