Constraints From Broadband Magnetotellurics on the Lithospheric Evolution of the Rehoboth and Kaapvaal Cratons, Southern Africa.
Abstract:
The Rehoboth" Craton", interpreted mainly on potential field data patterns, lies beneath thick Kalahari sand cover and is a poorly studied and understood tectonic domain located between the Archaean Kaapvaal Craton and the Pan-African Damara Mobile Belt of Namibia. The thickness, internal structure and stabilization age of the Rehoboth lithosphere (ie, Archaean or Proterozoic), as well as the timing and nature of its accretion to the Kaapvaal Craton are largely unknown or are poorly constrained. With the objective of addressing these shortcomings, the SAMTEX (Southern African MT Experiment) project acquired a~ 1400 km long, NW-SE trending profile across the Kaapvaal, Rehoboth and Damara terrains. This profile, which forms part of the larger array of MT stations that SAMTEX has installed across the sub-continent over the three year period since September 2003, consists of 68 broadband stations …
