Conventional microscopy. Compact orthokeratosis as a clue to chronic dermatophytosis and candidiasis

Abstract:

Just as neutrophils within the cornified layer may be a helpful clue to histologic diagnosis of acute dermatophytosis and acute candidiasis so, too, may compact orthokeratosis be a clue to chronic lesions of these fungal infections. Associated with such compact orthokeratosis, there also may be focal parakeratosis, slight epidermal hyperplasia, slight spongiosis, and a sparse to moderately dense superficial perivascular infiltrate of lymphocytes and histiocytes to the upper part of the dermis.
