Cooperative efforts for earthquake risk management in developing countries

Abstract:

The Quito Earthquake Risk Management Project has three main objectives: to improve the understanding of Quito's earthquake hazards; to raise the awareness of earthquake risks both within Ecuador and internationally; and to design self sustaining programs for managing earthquake risk in Quito. The project participants are organized into four groups consisting of Ecuadorians and foreigners who contribute overall guidance on long term project planning. The Quito, Ecuador, School Earthquake Safety Project aims to retrofit a representative sample of the city's high risk schools and create a procedure for the future retrofitting of other schools.
