Corticotomy as adjunctive therapy to orthodontic treatment
Abstract:
Functional, esthetic and psychological problems are among the main reasons why patients of different ages seek orthodontic consultation. Prolonged orthodontic treatment increases periodontal risks, while surgical methods that produce results in a shorter time have been shown to have significantly reliable effects on movement rates. In the present study, a literature search of research papers from the years 2016 to 2021 was performed, within which systemic analyses, clinical trials and case reports were selected. The analyzed research provided results that support corticotomy as an adjunct to orthodontic treatment since they reflect that this technique accelerates treatment compared to conventional orthodontics. In addition, the results of the treatments described in the research indicate that corticotomy effectively avoids undesired consequences after orthodontic treatment, such as root or bone resorption. It is concluded that corticotomy as an adjunct to orthodontic treatment has great benefits, among which are mainly mentioned the reduction of treatment time in general and the reduction of periodontal damage. In addition, a significant difference was found in the investigations conducted over the years.
