Cost Effective test-bed for Comparison of SDN Network and Traditional Network

Abstract:

Communication Networks are evolving towards Software Defined Networking (SDN) being managed by a centralized programmable controller, taking advantage of the separation of the control plane and the forwarding plane that constitutes the fundamental characteristic of SDN. However, there are still traditional networks that manage network devices that contain the control plane and the forwarding plane on the same equipment. In particular, the tests were developed using cost-effective hardware, open source software incorporated into the Raspberry Pi 3 embedded system based on the official Raspbian distribution. Although the real SDN presents performance values and acceptable response times, it is surpassed by the traditional network that obtains a superior performance in TCP data flows of 96.9 Mbits/sec, in UDP data flows of 99.9 Mbits/sec and times of average response of 17.48 ms., considering the direct frame switching between the virtual switch and the host node.
