Determination of flow paths and quantification of neighbourhood relationships in hydrostratigraphic units by mathematical morphology


Abstract:

In this paper the application of mathematical morphology operators in the description of hydrogeological systems is presented, namely, in the determination of flow paths and in the quantification of neighbourhood relationship. An adequate sequence of morphological operators leads to the construction of a novel algorithm to identify the flow paths. In what concerns the study of neighbourhood relationships that exist between the units, the concept of vicinity function is adopted to inform about the distance between the different units. Images of simulated hydrostratigraphic units are used to illustrate the developed approaches.
