Development and application of advanced technologies for the study of the performance and improvement of rigid pavement design methods
Abstract:
Concrete pavements with Portland cement, also known as rigid pavements, are formed by a concrete slab, reinforced or not, supported on the natural subgrade soil or on a granular material treated with some binder. Thanks to the advances in computing and research, the empirical-mechanistic design procedures have become more popular in pavement engineering, ensuring a more reliable design, not only from the perspective of input variables, but also for the pbkp_rediction of structure performance over time. Pavement instrumentation is a valuable procedure to monitor the performance of these structure in situ while also a way to quantity their response to load and weather conditioning. In this article the authors analyze the development and application of advanced technologies to the study of the performance and improvement of design methods for rigid pavements considering different efforts caused by the action of vehicle loads or by temperature changes in the slab these can cause stresses between the slab and the support. In the design or revision of these structure by means of empirical-mechanistic procedures. it is necessary to characterize the component materials of the system. The response of the system in terms of tensions deformation and displacement is used. Together with the failure criteria to pbkp_redict the deterioration of the structure according to the reliability of the design process.
