EFFECTS OF A 2-YEAR PRIMARY CARE LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION ON CARDIOMETABOLIC RISK FACTORS
Abstract:
Introduction: Intensive lifestyle interventions (ILI) are the approach to treat obesity and control associated cardiometabolic risk factors. Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of an intensive weight loss intervention in primary care. Methods: 18 clinics were randomized equally to usual care (HA) or IIEV and subsequently enrolled 803 adults with obesity from participating clinics. Results: As recently demonstrated, IIEV lost significantly more weight over 24 months than HA. Fasting glucose decreased more in IIEV compared to HA at 12 months. Conclusions: A pragmatic IIEV produced clinically relevant improvements in cardiometabolic health in an underserved population over 24 months.
