Effects of photobiomodulation therapy in dentoalveolar-derived mesenchymal stem cells: a review of literature
Abstract:
This review aims to present and discuss the published data on the application of photobiomodulation therapy (PBMT) on cultured cells, including dentoalveolar-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ddMSCs). The knowledge of the effects of PBMT on ddMSCs is of importance for future application in tissue engineering approaches aiming to regenerate missing dental tissues, among others. The tissue engineering, which is based on the triad stem cells, growth factors, and scaffolds, presents shortcomings that could be circumvented by the effects of the PBMT. Thus, our research group has proposed the PBMT as a fourth element of tissue engineering. This proposition is based on the published data on the effects of PBMT on different cell types, including ddMSCs. Future perspectives on PBMT and ddMSCs will be presented showing translational studies of tissue regeneration induced by PBMT. The experience of our research group supported by other studies of the literature shows the beneficial effects of PBMT. Moreover, this review will show that PBMT on ddMSCs and tissue regeneration is still a huge field for future investigations not only in vitro but also in vivo.
