Food habits of University students in Valencia


Abstract:

Background: Knowing all about eating habits is important for the public health of a country, because food is closely related, directly or indirectly, to health condition. Food habits acquired during adolescence and early adulthood influence dietary practices later in life. The objective of this paper is to describe food habits and related aspects in a group of University students. Methods: A survey on 154 students from the Polytechnic University of Valencia was carried out. They were asked about their daily activity, health condition, place and number of meals during the day, frequency of consumption of the different food groups and alcohol intake. Results: Lunch is perceived as the main meal of the day and a high proportion have it away from home at least two days a week. Consumption of alcohol takes place mostly on week ends and especial occasions. Physical activity of this group was classified as average; boys practice sport activities more often than women. The traditional Spanish siesta is not a common practice in this group.
