Immersive system of recognition and control of gestures using virtual reality for rehabilitation of the upper extremities in patients with acquired brain injury (ABI)

Abstract:

This investigation presents the development of an immersive system based on virtual reality that aims to contribute to rehabilitation therapies performed by people with motor impairment in upper limbs due to a cerebral vascular accident or stroke. The selected motor exercises were validated by a professional physiotherapist after which these exercises were adapted to the immersive system for rehabilitation of the upper limb. The architecture of the system consists of two fundamental elements: The first is the 3D modeling of the virtual environment and the arm and hand of the patient, and the second is the system of gestural sensors and touch controls that allows the user to interact with the exercises in the virtual world. This system has been tested on patients who have suffered stroke.
