Introduction: Considering resistance


Abstract:

In preparing a text on resistance in education, we find ourselves in a similar pbkp_redicament. Resistance related to education and educational settings has been extensively addressed across a broad continuum of research and policy. Yet its very nature remains elusive and poorly understood. Educational programs such as drug abuse resistance education (DARE) have appropriated the concept (or term) of resistance as a way of encouraging children to, in the words of former First Lady Nancy Reagan," Just say no" to drugs. Paul Willis' famous study, Learning to Labour (1977) has been widely cited and seen as seminal in the field as he has carefully documented how resisting authority in school
