Quinoa: Overview
Abstract:
Quinoa, an ancient crop from the Andean region, belongs to the Chenopodiaceae family. It is also cultivated in other continents, in Africa, Asia, Australia, Europe, and North America. Quinoa production is around 80000t (8×107kg) annually. Quinoa is a unique food grain, which contains all essential amino acids in the correct balance. It has the ability to adapt to a wide range of agroecological regions. The tender leaves of quinoa are also edible. Quinoa could contribute to food security and nutrition for humankind worldwide. The year 2013 was designated as 'The International Year of the Quinoa' by the FAO. Several events were promoted worldwide.
