Reduced-Order Representation of a Linear System from Its Impulse Response.

Abstract:

The relationships between the impulse response of a linear system and the parameters of its approximate transfer function - the number of which is no larger than four - is investigated in the three cases of an over-damped and under-damped second-order system, and of a higher-order system represented by the Strejc form. The basic data are the time of the maximum of the impulse response and the corresponding amplitude, and the amplitude at half that time. From these relationships a method is derived for determining an approximate transfer function for a linear system defined by its experimentally-obtained impulse response and three examples of application are given.
