Review of “Sociopolitical Perspectives on Language Policy and Planning in the USA” by Thom Huebner and Kathryn A. Davis (ed.)


Abstract:

Disavowing any claim to being a “comprehensive picture of contemporary language policy and planning issues in the US”(xiii), this collection is nonetheless an outstanding volume of chapters from a colloquium on the sociopolitical dimensions of language policy and planning held at the American Association of Applied Linguistics Conference (AAAL) in 1997. Topics range from historical analysis of language policy and planning, to official English movements, indigenous language issues, politics and policies, dialects, deafness, foreign language education, culture, and higher education. Three sections,(1) Praxis,(2) Policy and Politics, and (3) Language Policy/Planning Frameworks, provide the demarcations of the selections.
