Abstract:
Created as an accessible introduction to the major areas of research in sign language sociolinguistics, The Sociolinguistics of Sign Language delivers seven chapters on topics including multilingualism, the global approach to sign languages, bilingualism, language contact, sociolinguistic variation, discourse analysis, language planning and policy, and language attitudes. Metzger and Bahan, for example, in their chapter on discourse analysis, provide an introductory narrative to the basic concepts of discourse analysis, including pragmatics, ethnography of communication, interactional sociolinguistics, and speech act theory. They then turn to apply the concepts in an examination of sign language discourse, providing concrete examples and concluding with a discussion of the relevance of discourse genre.
