Abstract:

These objectives are realized across three sections: Colonialism, Imperialism and Global Process; Nation-states and Minorities; and Language, Discourse and Ethnic Style. Along the way, the voices of notables such as Whorf, Gumperz, Fishman, and Sapir are joined by many others writing from a variety of perspectives. Each section is prefaced by a short introduction to the pieces that will be presented. Without a doubt, the role of languages and language diversity in the discussion of ethnicity and race has been underdeveloped and has not received the attention it deserves on a broad scale. This edited collection is an important step toward rectifying the status quo. However, the book only approaches its potential and offers slightly more than a single source for very important work.
