Social representations about publishing in scientific journals

Abstract:

In Venezuela, the idea of not wanting to produce or publish prevails more and more, given that scientific activity is no longer valued or supported for several years. These actions impact the work of researchers and, therefore, it was appropriate to analyze the social representations that a group of teachers who work in Venezuelan universities have about publication in scientific journals. This analysis was carried out through field research guided by the phenomenological-interpretative paradigm, taking into account the experiences of 15 informants surveyed via email from four universities. Among the findings, it stands out that: (a) They positively valued the importance of publishing the results of their research, despite the diminished interest in doing so due to the current limitations of their context of action in Venezuela; and (b) their social representations are constrained to a social origin and are specified based on the internalization of experiences, behavior models and various existing thoughts in their sociocultural context. It is concluded that such social representations have had a negative impact on the behavior patterns and models that restrict the possibility of publishing in scientific journals.
