Therapy Using Serious Games to Improve Phonological Awareness in Children with Functional Dyslexia

Abstract:

Nowadays, there are many pedagogical methods for the treatment of children with dyslexia. However, the results are not always as expected, due to heavy and repetitive methods. Therefore, to contribute to the problem, this research aims to develop a video game based on a methodological guide for the application of strategies to support the teaching-learning process, which is characterized by being interactive. The MeISE software development methodology facilitated the creation of the educational software since it analyzed the most common learning problems of reading and writing in children with dyslexia. In order to evaluate the acceptance and incidence in relation to the traditional method, the proposal has been applied in a psychological center for children with special difficulties. Among which, the indicators used for the evaluation of the interactive software resulted in the majority acceptance of the children and an improvement of 44%. The case studies suggest that the video game awakens in children a greater interest in the treatment and improves their visual and reading skills.
