Automated system of storage and recovery (AS/RS), through artificial vision for flexible manufacturing systems for educational purposes

Abstract:

Storing raw material and retrieving finished products, in Flexible Manufacturing System (FMS) is one of the essential elements. The FMS systems have problems like the high costs of the equipment and maintenance, a lot of space for storing, more people included in the processing system, not easy to change the system and others. These reasons make necessary to find a solution that must be able to eliminate the disadvantages that the non-automatic systems have. The work presented in this paper is the description of the design and implementation of a prototype for automating the storage and retrieval system AS/RS that uses computer vision technics. The system consists of an aluminum structure divided into shelves where the items contained in pallets will be stored, the manipulation will be done by a cartesian robot with 4 axes X, Y, Z and B. This system was implemented at the Manufacturing Flexible Cell of the CNC Laboratory of the University of the Army Forces at Latacunga Ecuador. The implemented system is able to store and to retrieve mechanical manufacturing items in an automated way.
