BATSE observations of Her X‐1: The 35 day cycle, orbit determination, and torque studies

Abstract:

Results of timing and spectral analyses of Her X‐1 are presented, utilizing observations by the BATSE experiment from the CGRO mission to date. A correlation is observed between the hard x‐ray pulsed flux and spin frequency derivative, a measure of the torque acting on the neutron star. An apparent correlation is also found between the 35 day cycle start times and the pulsed flux. Orbital parameters are obtained from the BATSE data, with evidence found for an orbital period derivative slightly less than that reported in Deeter et al. (1991).
