Characterization of the underground hydrics availabilities in the regions of Castelo Branco and Idanha-a-Nova

Abstract:

The present work concerns to the study of the public water supply system, actual situation in Castelo Branco and Idanha-a-Nova, both in the centre of Portugal. The Castelo Branco and Idanha-a-Nova geographical area is about, respectively, 1439.94 Km2 and 1412.73 Km2 with a population of 50 000 people and 11 700 people, being an inner region of the country with big problems of water supply during the summer months. By defining the underground potential of all regions, it will be possible to establish an efficient system management. The working data is available in a few Portuguese water institutions, and summarizes to 2002 and 2005, the groundwater volumetric supplies, served population and lithology. To characterize and synthesize the working data it was used the Principal Components Analysis and the Multiple Correspondence Analysis. With this method the dimension space of samples and variables projection was restricted, reducing the information to a minimum. To estimate the groundwater resources it was used a geostatistical approach to characterize and quantify the data uncertainty, such as Ordinary Kriging and Indicator Kriging of the new Correspondence Analysis synthesis factors. It was made a study to calculate hydric potentially on study areas, by using Borehole Hydrograph Method and Stream Hydrograph Separation Method. It was concluded that the rocks most productive are the Greywacke Shale and the Quartzite being the less productive Sandstone.
