Control, Regulation and Storage Systems to Optimize the Integration of Solar Power

Abstract:

Increasing integration of a solar energy into the power system increases the importance of its control and regulation. The new solar energy technologies and smart grid technologies substantially modify the power system, acquiring this way a great amount of active elements. New devices in the grid become more important; power storage systems, regulation systems and control systems are described in this paper. When talking about power storage systems, nowadays the most important are pump and turbine systems which are used in the power grid and the electric vehicle connected to the grid. Regarding the power control, the systems applied are tap transformers and capacitor banks. However, FACTS devices are becoming increasingly important, whether they are connected in series or in parallel, they combine conventional systems, power electronics and microelectronics, together with modern telecommunication systems. Finally, the demand management systems enable us to determine the cost of energy for the consumers on the real time basis. This way the user can decide when and for how much money he wants to consume the energy. If different types of technologies integrated in the power grid are compared, different behaviors are observed. Therefore, it is possible to select those devices of control, regulation and management that should be applied to optimize the power grid. (orig.)
