Evaluation of kenaf production in subtropical Argentina

Abstract:

A 3-year study was undertaken to determine the potential for growing kenaf in northwestern Argentina. Nine cultivars were evaluated. Tainung 2 produced the greatest amount of dry matter (8.94 ton/ha). Long fibre yield was significantly different among the cultivars, with Tainung 2, Everglades 41 and SF-192 producing the highest yields. No significant differences in percent long fibre or stem diameter, were detected. Differences in dry matter among years were detected for only N-7 and Tainung 1. The trials indicated that kenaf production should be relatively consistent from year to year in the region.
