Opportunities for immersion in English Language Learning at the CENID of the Technical University of Babahoyo.


Abstract:

For many years learning English as a Foreign Language in Ecuador has been considered a controversial issue within the institutional policies and, in the undergraduate curriculum, it is not regarded as a mainstream subject. Since English has for long been taught in a traditional way, the opportunities to involve students in the real use of the language in class, as well as, the promotion of it outside the classroom were also lessened. As a consequence, students’ learning and society attitudes have been discouraged towards the learning of English. Nowadays, the results of these situations can be evidenced in the rates of students’ dropouts and the percentage of students who fail the modules at the Language Center (CENID) of the Technical University of Babahoyo.
