Overview of the competence-based approach in Latin America

Abstract:

The competency-based approach requires a great number of conditions for its implementation in university education, conceiving the human being from the integrality and complexity of its dimensions, in permanent interaction with the context. In this regard, the objective of this article is to explain the evolution of the competency-based approach at a higher education level in latin america; for which two instruments were used, one type matrix for the content analysis of the official documents and another type questionnaire addressed to the curricular representatives; the same categories of analysis were used in its construction. Among the results, it is worth noting that there is diversity in the models assumed in the universities, some of which are not clear as to the methodology that is being applied or is going to be applied. This approach has had problems in its development due to the lack of teacher training, inconveniences in its implementation and subsequent evaluation. Finally, criteria must be unified in terms of the conceptualization of competences, since this hinders the development of the focus in the transformation processes. Limitations are observed to transfer the competences declared in the profile to the instructional designs and therefore to the learning experiences.
