User interface co-designed with children

Abstract:

Co-design is a method to develop software through experimentation by identifying the users’ real needs. The goal is to improve the usability and functionality of the software. In this paper, the co-design process of a Pedagogic Conversational Agent to teach programming to children is described. The paper is focused on how to extract information from the children to generate the interface that covers their expectations. To do that, 66 children between eight to ten years of age were requested to write a dialogue with their computer about how they would like to be taught programming. From the dialogue analysis, criteria have been elicited to define the profile and features of the Pedagogic Conversational Agent interface and its tasks.
