Pedagogic conversational agent dialogue management to learn how to program

Abstract:

Pedagogic Conversational Agents are interactive systems that teach by talking to the students. In the literature, no cases of using agents for teaching programming to children have been found. In this paper, an agent to instruct to children in this subject is proposed. However, given the complexity of designing this new type of agent, the focus is on how to design the agent-student dialogue. 66 students, from 8 to 10 years old, were requested to type a dialogue between them and the computer on how they would like to be taught programming. From the analysis of the dialogues gathered, a list of recommendations is provided for any researcher or teacher who would like to use PCAs to teach programming in Primary Education.
